Guam Preservation Trust, September 18, 2009 -- Guam History Day, the island’s leading program for history education, invites middle and high school students on Guam to enter its 3rd annual competition. This year’s theme is Innovation in History: Impact and Change and students are asked to examine how these subjects have shaped the course of history. More than half a million students in grades 6-12, including over 500 from Guam’s schools are expected to enter this year’s competition. Whether they attend private, public, or defense schools, students will apply the skills of a historian as they conduct research for projects they hope will take them all the way to the National History Day (NHD) competition held each June in College Park, Maryland. All of Guam’s middle and high schools were invited to attend the school-level coordinators’ meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 3:30pm at the Guam Preservation Office, located in second floor of the Terlaje Professional Building in Hagåtña. Most students begin preparing for the competition soon after the school year begins. Their teachers will brainstorm with them to choose topics and provide them with the guidelines for entering the competition. A student may enter the competition in one of five categories: exhibit, performance, documentary, research paper, and website; they also may decide to enter as individuals or as members of a group. The Guam History Day program’s impact goes well beyond the students who participate. Parents also get involved, making it a family affair. It also provides teachers with a unique alternative to what can be accomplished in the traditional classroom. The culminating event, where school-level winners will compete at the island-wide competition, is planned for March 27, 2010. The Guam History Day program is seeking sponsorships from the community. For more information regarding sponsorships, please contact Joe Quinata at 472-9439/40. The NHD program is funded by The History Channel, ABC-CLIO, Jostens, as well as private foundations. Judges for the competition are university professors, high school teachers, museum curators and other public historians. Over $150,000 in scholarships will be awarded to top national winners, including a full tuition scholarship to Case Western Reserve University. Students and teachers can find out more about how to participate in Guam History Day by contacting their school principal or Joe Quinata, State Coordinator at 472-9439/40 or Email: jqpreservation@guam.net.
